Introduction to Incremental Sampling Methodology

Event Announcement

About This Webinar:

The Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council (ITRC) team on Incremental Sampling Methodology (ISM) developed guidance to improve the quality of site characterization. The ITRC ISM guidance document was published in February 2012. This presentation provides an overview of the ISM guidance, which is organized into sections on ISM principles, systematic planning, statistical ISM design, field implementation, laboratory sample processing, making decisions, regulatory concerns, case studies and stakeholder input.

The overall goal of ISM is to provide a reliable estimate of the mean concentration for each contaminant of concern within each decision or sampling unit. The principles section describes the foundational concepts of incremental sampling. Systematic planning starts with the development of the conceptual site model and identification of each decision unit. Statistical ISM design estimates both the mean concentration and uncertainty. Coordinated field activities collect and combine individual increments into complete samples. Making decisions describes various mechanisms for using the ISM data and assessing data quality. The case studies provide real life examples of using ISM. The stakeholder section summarizes the concerns that citizen and environmental advocates are likely to have and how to address these issues.

The purpose of ISM laboratory processing is to produce an appropriately sized subsample that has the analytes of interest at the same concentration as the large incremental sample collected in the field. The end goal is to produce results that represent the conditions at the site and facilitate good decisions.

Topics the Presentation Will Cover Include:

  • Overview of ISM Guidance
  • Disaggregation, Sieving, Milling and Subsampling
  • ISM Case Studies

Who Should Attend?

  • Consultants
  • Regulatory Officials
  • Federal Government Officials (i.e. - USACE, etc.)
  • Site Owners

A question and answer session will immediately follow the presentation. At the conclusion of each webinar, you will be asked for your feedback and opinions for future webinar topics to be developed by TestAmerica.
