About This Webinar:

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a family of synthetic compounds containing thousands of chemicals formed from carbon (C) chains with fluorine (F) atoms attached. The C-F bond is one of the shortest and strongest bonds in nature, and is responsible for most of the unique and useful characteristics of these compounds.

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are fully fluorinated compounds and were the most widely produced and studied of these chemicals. PFAS are used in a wide variety of industrial and commercial products such as textiles, leather, aqueous film forming foams (AFFF), metal finishing, semi-conductors, paper and food packaging, coating additives, photo lithography, cleaning products and pesticides.

PFOA and PFOS are persistent in the environment and are resistant to typical environmental degradation processes. As a result, they are widely distributed and are found in soil, sediments, groundwater, air and tissue across the United States. According to the US EPA, certain PFAS can bioaccumulate in the human body, and there is evidence that exposure to PFAS can lead to adverse health outcomes.

Topics the Presentation will Cover:

  •     A review of the chemistry and nomenclature
  •     Sources of PFAS in the environment
  •     Exposure pathways and risk
  •     A glimpse of the limited guidance and regulation that is available nationwide
  •     Discerning between the various analytical approaches
  •     Evaluating sampling protocols and best practices
  •     In introduction to precursors and replacement chemicals

A question and answer session will immediately follow the presentation.
